Keeping Christ in Christmas

John 1:14 - And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

A survey of five thousand households, conducted in August 2003 by the Conference Board’s Consumer Research Center, showed that consumers planned to spend more for Christmas that year than the previous one---in spite of continuing national economic woes. One-third of the families surveyed planned to spend $500 or more on presents in 2003.

No one knows exactly when it happened, but Christmas in America has become more about money than the manger. Certainly gift giving is a meaningful part of the Christmas celebration. After all, our gifts to one another and to God remind us of His greater gift of His own Son, Jesus Christ (Romans 6:23). But it is easy to let material gifts overshadow the greatest Gift, to think more about what we want than Whom we need, and to let money replace ministry in our attitudes toward others.

Why not begin this Christmas season, either alone or with family and friends, refocusing on the Reason for the season. Give to Christ the only gift He really wants, this and every year---the gift of your loving heart.

All the Christmas presents in the world mean nothing without the presence of Christ.
