A New Beginning
Luke 5:1-11
Luke 5:2 - And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them and were washing their nets.
Don’t criticize Peter for sitting in the boat and working on his nets. You can’t help but admire a person who will work all night (fishing was Peter’s job, not his hobby) in spite of discouragement and who will work in the day to get ready to go back to work at night! Peter was no loafer. In fact, whenever God calls a person, He calls one who is working.
That is a good lesson to learn today: do the task that is at hand. Do it well, and do it diligently, and the Lord will lead you into greater things for His glory.
It did Peter a lot of good to sit in that boat (he was a captive audience) and to listen to Christ teach. After all, faith comes by hearing God’s Word (Romans 10:17), and Peter would need real faith to obey the Lord and let down his net. When our Lord permits delays and disappointments in our lives, it is only that He might bring greater blessings. Peter caught more fish in one trip than he ever dreamed he could do.
Best of all, Peter saw himself. The blessings of God’s Son brought to his life didn’t make him proud and independent; rather, they made him humble and submissive. And the Lord promoted him! He became a fisher of men instead a fisher of fish.
Yes, in the everyday activities of life – even in your job – Christ wants to come to bless you and to lead you into greater things. Will you let Him?
